Drama
Amazon’s first original offering for young adults is an intriguing combination of Lost and the Breakfast Club – and it works. Crucially, the cast of characters stranded on a desert island are all teenage girls. For them, that makes life even more unbearable. They all come from very different backgrounds — from a spoiled rich girl to an Indian — but they must put their differences aside to survive and learn a thing or two about themselves along the way. Things get darker and more exciting when Rachel Griffiths’ Gretchen Klein enters the picture as the head of the mysterious Dawn of Eve program.
This British drama introduces Robyn (Anna Paquin), a quick-witted, ill-decisive PR professional whose job it is to cover up blunders in the lives of high-profile clients. She is highly effective at acting, but is just as prone to blowing up her own personal life through choices that threaten relationships with her loved ones. Watching Robyn and her associates clean up celebrity messes is entertaining enough, and with two short six-episode seasons, it can be quickly consumed.
Scam artist Marius is released from prison but is being hunted by the mobster he once robbed. So he takes on the identity of his cellmate Pete and steps back into the lives of Pete’s estranged family, who are none the wiser. Bryan Cranston brings all the gravitas to mobster Vince in this part-drama, party comedy. The twists and predicaments take you through the addictive episodes just as quickly as Pete works out his flaws.
A Very British Scandal (2022)
A Very British Scandal unfolds over three three-hour episodes, dramatizing the widely publicized true divorce between the Duke and Duchess of Argyll in the 1960s. Starring Claire Foy, from Netflix’s The Crown, and WandaVision’s Paul Bettany, it shows everything from the couple’s first meeting to their court appearances. A newer entry to Prime Video, As We See It earns a spot among the best shows. This heartfelt series, starring three actors who identify as autistic, follows young adults on the autism spectrum as they seek jobs, make friends and find love. Neurotypical actors usually play autistic characters on screen, so the casting sets these apart. It’s also heartfelt, funny and gripping, with well-rounded characters that you want to root for. I could let the show’s glowing Metacritic score speak for itself — but whatever convinces you, this should be your next watch.
Picnic at Hanging Rock (2018)
This TV version of Picnic at Hanging Rock isn’t quite a masterpiece like the 1975 film adaptation of the classic Australian novel. But it’s just as mysterious, unfolding a dreamy yet terrifying veil over a fictional disappearance in the isolated Australian bush. When three college students and their governess go missing after a picnic in the rocky area, hysteria ensues in the community and the esteemed Appleyard College, run by the formidable headmistress Natalie Dormer. The Underground Railroad (2021-)
Sublime filmmaker Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) will adapt Colson Whitehead’s novel The Underground Railroad into a powerful 10-episode series. Set in the southern US in the 1800s, the fictional story follows blacks who try to escape slavery through a network of hidden tracks and tunnels. With magical realism and an amazing cast including Thuso Mbedu and William Jackson Harper, The Underground Railroad is an emotional and hair-raising triumph.
This gripping British series is about, yes, an informer and the dark realm involved in forcing someone to take on the dangerous act. Paddy Considine (who now has an appearance in the Game of Thrones prequel) stars as DS Gabe Waters, a counter-terrorism officer tasked with infiltrating a far-right movement in West Yorkshire. Teaming up with an excellent Bel Powley (The Morning Show, The King of Staten Island) as the young and curious DC Holly Morten, he tries to get British Pakistani Raza (Nabhaan Rizwan) on board to uncover information about a possible terrorist attack. A provocative thriller that keeps you on your toes.
The Last Tycoon (2016-2017)
Matt Bomer, Lily Collins and Kelsey Grammer star in this 1930s drama about a brilliant Hollywood executive. Self-made prodigy Monroe Stahr (Bomer) has a constant battle with studio head Pat Brady (Grammer). The series takes an interesting angle, examining the influence of the Nazis and the German market on Hollywood politics in a world on the brink of war. The Last Tycoon is based on the last book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, unfinished and published posthumously, with loose inspiration from producer Irving Thalberg, known as The Boy Wonder during the early 1900s. Beautifully acted, lavish to watch and centered on absorbing characters, The Last Tycoon ended too soon after one season.
If you like fashion and historical drama, The Collection brings the two together appropriately. Set in a post-World War II Paris, the eight-part series follows two enterprising brothers who clash as they build their fashion empire. Rivalry, betrayal and Nazi occupation are the provocative elements that light the fires under this beautifully filmed family drama. Note that once you get hooked on the deftly layered intrigue, you won’t have to face the disappointment of a second season.
Thriller
Adapted from Lee Child’s bestselling Jack Reacher book series, Reacher’s 10-episode first season packs a punch. Jack, a muscular former US Army military officer, played by Alan Ritchson, arrives in a small town and is promptly arrested for a murder he didn’t commit. Armed with killer prowess and solid detective skills, the protagonist eventually fends off a series of enemies while uncovering a criminal conspiracy. A treat for fans of crime thrillers and lovers of children’s books.
While Season 2 of Homecoming didn’t quite make its way, Season 1 got underway. Julia Roberts stars in this psychological thriller about an Army rehabilitation center run by dubious owners. Using an effective, mysterious story that spans two timelines, Homecoming is high on suspense and paranoia as it reveals the true purpose of the facility. Fun fact: The series uses actual film scores from Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and more.
The Man in the High Castle depicts an alternate history in which the Axis Powers (Rome-Berlin-Tokyo) win World War II. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the series follows characters from the 1960s who live in a parallel universe where Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire rule the US. But impossible newsreels emerge of a world in which Germany and Japan lose the war, causing some to revolt. To really bring out his dystopia credentials, The Man in the High Castle is directed by producer Ridley Scott. Fully realized and with a focused plot, this is gripping TV.
The premise of Hanna, a 2011 Joe Wright action thriller, is so good that Amazon has fleshed it out for a TV series. Starring Esme Creed-Miles as the skilled young assassin living in the Romanian wilderness, Hanna the TV show expands on the teen’s backstory and explains why the CIA’s Marissa Wiegler has an obsession with capturing her.
Sci-fi
When a wheelchair-bound Irene York tells her husband Franklin that she wants to go to the stars, he leads her out of the house and into the garden. Moonlight shines down on them through holes in the trees, but Franklin doesn’t stop walking. Prime Video’s new sci-fi series Night Sky opens with the sweet and healthy couple from York, who gain access to another planet through a mysterious room on their property. The unknown world — as well as the enigmatic path — will lure you in, and Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons delivers great protagonists.
Amazon rescued The Expanse from the realm of canceled TV, giving us six seasons. Thank goodness it did, because The Expanse is clever sci-fi with realistic characters, high production values and a hint of detective noir. In a future where humanity has colonized the solar system, a conspiracy threatens to start a cold war between the major powers. A gang of anti-heroes is in the middle. Look forward to more space western themes in the consistently excellent later seasons.
In this sci-fi western, Josh Brolin stars as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher who finds an intrusive, inexplicable void in one of his pastures. The mysterious well isn’t the only thing he has to worry about, though: his family is also engaged in a fight with neighbors who want to take part of their land. Between these two developments, there is more than enough going on in this small town to keep your attention. Stick with the series long enough and you’ll be drawn into the rural mystery.
Tales from the Loop (2020-)
Not just any show about a small town where strange things happen, Tales from the Loop has a lot more under the surface. Based on a narrative art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, the series is beautiful to look at, as meticulous as possible with symmetrical frames. Light and space are infused with a picturesque feel. The interconnected townspeople are similarly nuanced, their stories exploring loneliness, aging, the impact of technology and more through sci-fi ideas.
Katie Yu, Aaron Epstein / Amazon Studios
Set in the near future, this sci-fi comedy imagines humans being able to upload themselves to a virtual afterlife. Nathan, a computer programmer played by Robbie Amell, is faced with that choice after a self-driving car accident and decides to upload to cozy, expensive Lake View. Though imperfect, Upload, which is part satire, part romance, and part murder mystery, is easy to consume. In addition, a second season is now streaming.
Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams (2017-2018)
A sci-fi anthology based on short stories by writer Philip K. Dick, Electric Dreams takes viewers into the future in each of the 10 stories. The series explores what it means to be human, is packed with intriguing premises and boasts an impressive number of stars. In one episode, Richard Madden and Holliday Grainger play a human and a telepathic mutant whose romance flares up as they try to prevent a war between their ilk. If you need a sci-fi fix, try an episode from this imaginative series.
The Black Mirror vibes are strong in this British series about technology gone wrong. The Feed is set in a futuristic London where a family develops an implant that allows people to livestream their lives without pressing a phone button. No, absolutely nothing can go wrong with that! Some pretty impressive actors pile up the cast, including David Thewlis and Michelle Fairley. While it’s not as polished or deep-cutting as Black Mirror, it’s still worth checking out – just grab your phone during the less gripping parts.
Comedy
The Kids in the Hall (2022-)
Prime Video has revived The Kids in the Hall, the Emmy-nominated Canadian sketch comedy show that originally ran from 1988 to 1995. at the end of the original show. That’s just the beginning of the fun.) Follow the comedians as they freak out over mislabeled desserts, fight over imaginary love interests, and write Earth’s last fax. But be warned: some of these sketches are very NSFW.
A 1950s housewife turned stand-up comedian? This brilliant series from Amy Sherman-Palladino, creator of Gilmore Girls, is packed with sparkling performances from Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, with dialogue to match. Set in a vibrant and changing New York City, our delightful heroine stars as a comedian, while going about her duties as an upper-class Jewish-American housewife. With impressive visuals, warmth and zingers, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel the complete package.
Seven strangers receive the same punishment for the community in this gripping comedy thriller set in Bristol, England. Fun, dark and moving, the six-episode show offers a compelling look at the backgrounds of the rule breakers and the relationships that form between them. The plot thickens when some members of the group come across a bag of money. If you need another draw, the show was co-created by Stephen Merchant, who co-created the UK version of The Office.
This unique series uses the Rotoscope animation technique to tell the story of a young woman who discovers she can manipulate time after a near-fatal car accident. Intriguing, right? It Gets Better: Bob Odenkirk plays Alma’s late father, who enlists her help in investigating his murder. Undone bends both time and space, is surreal and beautifully existential for those looking for deep material.
A sex scandal in the British Parliament? Starring Hugh Grant and Ben Wishaw? You can thank Russell T. Davies for dramatizing this bit of late 70s British politics. Jeremy Thorpe, a Liberal MP, wants to silence hapless ex-lover Norman before his career falls apart. See the murder plot, grand trial and media investigation through the dark, funny lens of A Very English Scandal.
If the Fleabag train somehow passes you, it’s time to let it hit you with its full, incredible power. Phoebe Waller-Bridge writes and stars in this extraordinary game-changing comedy series. A woman in her thirties who runs a café leads a sex life with a sense of humor that hides the tragedies she has not yet dealt with. Almost word for word perfect, with a fourth wall breaking device, Fleabag often does its best to both shock and devastate you, while being ridiculously funny.
Are you going to binge Katheryn Hahn after WandaVision? Marvel’s new favorite witch starred in one season of this memorable-titled 2016 comedy. Her character’s name is equally memorable: Chris Kraus, an artist and filmmaker who moves to Texas with her husband. She soon falls in love with his fellowship sponsor, played by Kevin Bacon. Yes, Kevin Bacon is in this. The dynamics of her marriage shift as her crush challenges everything in a clever, provocative and mature way. Sadly, I Love Dick didn’t score a second season, but the first is well worth it.
Catastrophe, with the final TV role of Carrie Fisher, is a rom-com about messy, chaotic people. Londoner Sharon and Bostonian Rob have a week-long stand that results in an unplanned pregnancy and Rob moves to the UK so they can start a family. The tricky part: Sharon and Rob know nothing about each other. Catastrophe, which covers age, sex, parenthood, marriage and love in its open book, is a fantastic rom-com that gives you four seasons to devour.
Transparent’s unique story follows Pfefferman’s siblings who discover their father is turning into a woman named Maura. Other aspects of the Pfeffermans’ lives, including a sour marriage and a disappointing child, give this tightly scripted comedy-drama a recognizable side. Gripping and ambitious, Transparant is a show to look forward to.
Mozart in the Jungle, a comedy-drama set in New York’s classical music scene, is as whimsical as the title suggests. Up-and-coming oboist Hailey meets eccentric conductor Rodrigo, who must breathe new life into the New York Symphony. Never getting lost with slang, Mozart in the Jungle charmingly reveals an edgier side of the string world by playing his own symphony of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.
A coming of age story. Secondary school. Movie references from the 80s. 80s music. Endearing characters. This gem of a show from a few years ago is easy to watch in the best possible way. David Myers (Craig Roberts) is a college student who gets a gig at Red Oaks, a Jewish country club, in the summer of 1985. As he finds out where he is going in love and life, David encounters eccentric, chaotic characters who have profuse laughs along with justifying your emotional investment. Put Red Oaks on your list of ultimate comfort viewing.
Superhero
The Boys stormed Amazon with its ultra-violent tale of antihero vigilantes seeking revenge on the world’s most beloved superheroes. But these heroes are not what they seem: their corporate leaders cover up their dark personal lives, including sexual harassment and the strange murder. With social commentary, black comedy and pops of gore, The Boys take an exciting and brazen step away from the family-friendly genre.
For those not a fan of cartoons, Invincible could be your converter, up there with other adult cartoons like BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty. Based on a comic book by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, Invincible follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his training to become a superhero just like his father, who happens to be the most powerful superhero in the world. Episodes are nearly 50 minutes long, tied together in one big, blood-spattered story. A subversive series with a massive cast including Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh and J.K. Simmons, Invincible takes you into his clever animated world.
The Boys Presents: Diabolical (2022-)
This superhero anthology features eight short films written by comedians such as Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, Justin Roiland and Ilana Glazer. Diabolical, a spin-off of Prime Video’s hit live-action show The Boys, takes an animated approach to its super-powered (and adult-oriented) adventures. Different animation styles are featured, and The Boys’ quintessential themes of over-the-top violence and social commentary are present. Please add this to your watch history before The Boys returns on June 3.
Although The Tick was unfortunately canceled after two seasons, the superhero comedy will still give you a hit of fast, colorful action with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Based on the comic book character, The Tick is a bulletproof hero who wears a, yes, blue tick suit. His help? The meek Arthur wearing a… moth suit. Their nemesis is The Terror, a supervillain in their city’s underworld. If you want to sit back and watch pure superhero entertainment, you’ve found the right show.
Fantasy
The Legend of Vox Machina (2022-)
Brace yourself for a brand new animated series centered around a group of rambunctious farm misfits named Vox Machina. Based on Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role (you don’t need to be familiar with that to enjoy this show), The Legend of Vox Machina sees its protagonists change from broken bar-hoppers to accepting a mission to stop evil brewing in Exandria . We’re further introduced to the characters in a musical number that takes place about halfway through the first episode. That’s right, I said musical number. But you’ll be dejected by every element this show throws at you. Why would anyone choose these misfits to fight for the kingdom? “Well… they do have a bear,” admits one royal decision-maker.
The Wheel of Time (2021-)
This fantasy show is an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s popular novel series. Rosamund Pike plays the mystical Moiraine, a member of a powerful women’s organization called the Aes Sedai. She is on the hunt for the reincarnation of the Dragon, a bearer of the One Power who went mad and destroyed much of the world. This reborn hero or heroine could potentially defeat an evil entity called The Dark One. Full of magic and evil monsters, the show caused quite a few eyeballs during its debut week. While it may not replace your favorite fantasy series, it may still be destined for your screen.
If you’re in a particularly meditative mood and thinking about life, relationships and the big choices we make in life, Forever will gently set your world on fire. June (Maya Rudolph) and Oscar (Fred Armisen) are a married couple who traverse their suburban lives until huge twists and turns take them to alien territory. Continue through the slow-burning first episode and you’ll be rewarded with an exceptionally crafted eight-episode series, gently wrapping you in its visually beautiful and meaningful dream.
This adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett combines two other British treasures in David Tennant and Michael Sheen. They play the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale respectively in this miniseries where the earth is on the brink of destruction thanks to a final battle between heaven and hell. Decided against this, after enjoying their time on the planet, the bickering couple teams up and tries to avoid Armageddon. With a stacked cast, including a cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch and, well, Satan, Good Omens is a worthy adaptation, thanks in large part to the double act of Tennant and Sheen.
Romance
Looking for love? With Love might just be the perfect feel-good rom-com. The charming premise sees the Diaz siblings, Lily and Jorge, navigate major holidays throughout the year, from Halloween to Christmas — major holidays that put pressure on singletons seeking romantic relationships. Follow the Diaz’s on their journey, along with their delightful and sometimes delightfully awkward extended family. A serious, enjoyable breeze.
The Pursuit of Love (2021)
You’ll either fall madly in love with, or raise an eyebrow, this romance based on Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel of the same name. The Pursuit of Love follows two cousins who represent different ways of life. Lily James is Linda Radlett, whose lavish romantic adventures see her travel from London to Paris. Emily Beecham, meanwhile, is Fanny Logan, navigating the limitations of married life. If you’re in the mood, this three-episode miniseries takes you on a tale of happiness and sorrow, laughter and pain.
Grab your blanket and a cup of tea for this sweet, cozy viewing. Modern Love is based on true personal essays about love from The New York Times column of the same name. These stories are subtly brought to life for the screen by an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel and, in Season 2, Minnie Driver and Kit Harington. Some stories won’t be tied with a neat bow, and some will take you to unexpected places. The overall tone is a good feel without being too gooey, and it could fuel your faith in the magic of true love.
Horror
Not only does this horror anthology series feature Japanese folklore and explorers treading uncharted territory, but the first chapter stars pre-Chernobyl Jared Harris. He plays the captain of Arctic exploration ships that get stuck in the ice. In addition to the harsh conditions and cabin fever, an unknown presence in the fog haunts the crew. Laced with atmospheric terror, The Terror is a thrilling, prestige horror. The Terror is available on Prime Video in Australia and AMC in the US (here’s a VPN guide).

Crime
Inspired by Michael Connelly’s novels, this seven-season police procedural sets things right for old-fashioned detective drama. We follow Los Angeles police detective Harry Bosch, who is haunted by the death of his mother. While he catches serial killers and protects his family, he investigates her murder. Functional and no-nonsense, Bosch provides a stable mystery with an equally stable lead. Good news, a spin-off series is underway on Amazon’s IMDb TV, with Titus Welliver remaining the titular detective.
Ripper Street (2012-2016)
This dark and gritty series is set in the late 1800s on the streets of Whitechapel, a place once terrorized by Jack the Ripper. Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) and the police deal with the aftermath of the Ripper murders, which left the London area in an anarchic state. Great acting, strong characters and, most importantly, strong dialogue make the episodic mysteries all the more exciting and compelling. Five fantastic seasons await you (consisting of six to eight episodes each).
Documentary
This comprehensive documentary series covers the story of Lorena Bobbitt, the woman who famously cut off her husband’s penis in 1993. It covers the incident and two subsequent trials, and includes a wide variety of interviews that add illuminating context to the decades-old events. It brings much-needed attention to the abuse Bobbitt is said to have suffered at the hands of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt. Executive produced by Jordan Peele, this well-researched series is well worthy of your attention.
In LulaRich, the directors of Hulu’s Fyre Festival documentary explore the dark side of multi-level marketing company LuLaRoe. The four-part documentary series interviews founders DeAnne and Mark Stidham and paints a not-so-rosy picture of the women’s clothing giant, known for its colorful and patterned leggings and tops. In the document, women who joined the company (and invested a lot of money in the process) faced smelly merchandise, a toxic culture and challenges in achieving financial goals. Settle in for an intriguing and well-crafted docuseries that highlights the stories of former LuLaRoe retailers.
Reality
Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls (2022- )
You may be familiar with Lizzo’s hits like Truth Hurts, her Grammy wins, or even her amazing flute skills, but it turns out she’s also a great reality show host. Her charisma is fully expressed in this eight-episode show, which sees 13 plus-size women vying for a spot as one of Lizzo’s backup dancers. Lizzo sets the bar high for these talented hopefuls and celebrates them when they knock gigs out of the park. A lively, catchy experience that’s perfect for binge-watching.

Netflix is probably the best single point access to streaming content – with so many big shows coming through the service, it’s almost essential to watch. Amazon, on the other hand, is a much bigger platform – content to rent or buy, additional channels to subscribe to.
