Amazon Prime Video drops a movie series at the beginning of each month if you’re looking for something new, but it doesn’t have a lot of new weekly releases.

Drama
Brad, a 47 – year – old man, is driven by Ben Stiller’s comparison and self – doubt ideas in this comedy. He has a cozy life with a nonprofit job, his loving wife (Jenna Fischer) and a gifted son who is preparing to attend college (Austin Abrams), but still compares himself to old friends who have embarked on lucrative, lucrative careers. On the same subject : Uncharted with Tom Holland will hit Netflix in July 2022. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021)
Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this biography of the English artist, inventor, entrepreneur and caretaker Louis Wain. Set in the late 19th century, it follows a man who, after adopting a stray kitten, creates world – famous surreal cat paintings. On the same subject : Absolutely the worst ways to die in video games. They also seem to show their own declining sanity. A play that feels good with a moving central performance from Cumberbatch, this hot portrait is filled with whimsy, even if it’s a little uneven.
Sound of Metal received a number of Oscar nominations, including best picture and best-selling actor Riz Ahmed. (He won in two categories: best sound and best film editing.) He plays Ruben, a punk-metal drummer who unfortunately begins to lose hearing. In addition to struggling with drug addiction, Ruben is forced to settle into his new life in the deaf community and learn American Sign Language. The film’s brilliant sound design immerses you in Ruben’s scary story and the experiences of those around him.
Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018)
If you liked Joaquin Phoenix in Joker or Her, here’s another movie featuring his acting chops in full display. The late cartoonist John Callahan stars Phoenix, a Portland – based artist who became a quadruple at 21 and had black humor in his work. To see also : Jenny Welbourn on YouTube Vlogging, a sustainable lifestyle and online burnout. “Don’t Worry” tells a story about addiction and recovery, and the time we find with its central figure is well spent. Jonah Hill is Callahan’s dedicated sponsor, and the team also includes Jack Black and Rooney Mara.
Selah and the Spades (2019)
If you’re in the dark-things-happen-at-boarding-schools genre, Selah and the Spades might be a topic to sign up for. A senior is in charge of a faction called the Spades that sells drugs to other students. But Selah is about to graduate, so he must find the right candidate to continue his legacy. Beautifully shot and guided by the unique lens of first director Tayarisha Poe, this is a taste of even more things to come.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
This biographical play is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin based on the relationship between I Love star Lucy Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem star as Ball and Arnaz, respectively. In other words, expect broken dialogue, memorable lines and a rich repartee. Standout Kidman incorporates the actor and comedian, giving heart to the couple’s complex romantic and professional relationship.
A sublime compilation that does not release the ball across its five films. Small Ax is a collection of unique stories about the lives of immigrants from the West Indies in London from the 60s to the 80s. They are all directed by Steve McQueen, who is working hard (when not?), Composing stories such as the Mangrove courtroom drama, based on the 1971 Mangrove Nine trial, starring Letitia Wright of Black Panther. Take a seat and throw this huge achievement.
This Irish drama shares some of its themes with the Netflix series 2021 Maid: A mother leaves an abusive party and has to rebuild her life. Like Maid, it’s a very strong and heartwarming journey that benefits from strong guidance. The film is a hard watch, but it’s also exciting. After overcoming obstacles, Sandra (Clare Dunne) tries to build her own house. Many of the characters we meet come to our aid. It is a worthwhile story in itself that brings hope amidst the darkness.
Shia LaBeouf wrote the script for this autobiographical film about a child actor and his relationship with his father. We follow Otis, who is traumatized after days on set with his father, a former rodeo comedian. LaBeouf plays the character who really inspired his father, giving Honey Boy even more psychological layers. This is an interesting cinematic therapy from a singular perspective.
One Night in Miami (2020)
If you haven’t seen One Night in Miami yet, this is a sign to clear your schedule. The Oscar-nominated play offers a fictional look at a real-life reunion that took place between Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, Muhammad Ali and Jim Brown in 1964. All four lead actors sing, and when they finally turn around for the film’s title. night, their imagined conversations and debates feel real. An inspiring, lively film reinforced by scenes between Leslie Odom Jr. and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Following lovers from diverse backgrounds and backgrounds, Pawel Pawlikowski’s historical drama is set in ravaged post – World War II Poland. Zula is an ambitious young singer who defies peasant identity, and Wiktor is a jazz musician who listens for a state – sponsored country music ensemble. Lear is ready to divide his kingdom over his three daughters, but not all of them accept it. If you’re okay with Shakespeare’s dialogue, sit back and marvel at Hopkins and cast ensemble casts, including Emily Watson, Jim Broadbent and Andrew Scott.
Before we jump into this Spike Lee movie, please note that it is a technically recorded stage play. And yet he is showing the magic of cinematics, thanks in large part to the captivating performances of Jon Michael Hill and Julian Parker. They play two young men dreaming of the promised land from its fixed spot on the path. Educational, moving, funny and surprisingly, Pass Over will keep you on your toes more than you think.
Get ready for Amazon’s first major movie to get you hooked. A broken nephew is a broken man who has suffered a terrible loss. Lee Chandler’s story will hit you hard after an emotional punch, as will huge performances from the likes of Michelle Williams. Another achievement from Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester on the Sea is unforgettable storytelling.
In the trademark style of Jim Jarmusch, this low-key indie narrows down the details of regular life with a distinct sense of humor. For a week, Paterson follows a bus driver and poet named Paterson who listens to passengers talking, takes his dog for walks and stops for a beer at his local bar. Adam Driver is the only one who makes everything visible non-stop. Plotted with the selfish characters who live in the town of New Jersey, Paterson offers a sensible insight into life, taking a look at the personal difficulties and new paths intertwined around them.
Thriller
Prime Video must be an Adam Driver fan. He has starred in several of his original films, including Paterson, Annette and this political thriller, which is based on the actual investigation into CIA interrogation practices after 9/11. The film follows Senate staff member Daniel Jones (Driver) as he works on the title report and moves back in time to point out the use of agency torture. It is an ambitious play with a well – constructed and resolute story that also includes Jon Hamm and Michael C Hall.
All The Old Knives (2022)
Prime Video’s new spy thriller hasn’t bothered all critics (here’s a review you should definitely read), but it’s not fully panned, either. The film introduces two former lovers and co-workers at the CIA Vienna station (Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton) who have reunited under less pleasant circumstances. The CIA mole is thought to have disturbed an agent years earlier, and the agency has launched Pine to question Newton. This intricate, back-heavy flick is attractive enough to fall back on if you need an evening escape.
At the beginning of this comedy thriller, we learn that the college seniors and their best friends Kunle and Sean plan to be the first Black men to complete a “legendary journey”, an achievement associated with an epic fraternity-hopping party . But when the students find a young white woman fallen off the floor in her house, the night turns into something completely different. The film, which mixes comedy and social commentary, is sometimes tense and lateral. A significant part is the connection between Kunle and Sean, played by great RJ Cyler and Donald Elise Watkins.
The Mad Women’s Ball (2021)
Directed, co – written and starred by Mélanie Laurent in this late 19th century French emotional thriller set. Laurent is a Geneviève, a nurse who tries to free Eugénie (Lou de Laâge), a woman committed to mental asylum when her family discovers that she is in contact with spirits. With excellent performances from both directors, The Mad Women’s Ball sweeps the inequalities of the era into its turbulent melodrama. A brilliant watch.
The Coen Brothers meet Wes Anderson in this hilarious black thriller directed by two amazing young female directors. Set in a snowy fishing town in Maine, Blow the Man Down follows sisters, played by Morgan Saylor and Sophie Lowe, who try to hide a man’s body after he attacked one of them and fought back. While committing the crime, they find themselves digging the dark secrets of the domestic matriarchs, weaving them into a noir mystery. It’s so great it sounds.
Psychological thriller with Joaquin Phoenix pre-Joker? Yes, more people need to watch You’ve Never Been Here. Lynne Ramsay’s masterful insight into a story about a batsman hired to rescue a politician’s daughter from a human trafficking network, who is bare, brutal and just merciless, running a tight 90 minutes. With Phoenix making its actor extremely dedicated, you were never really here or your mediocre thriller.
Even if you have heard good things about The Handmaiden, nothing can prepare you for the crazy ridges that make up this exquisite South Korean film. Classified as an erotic psychological thriller, The Handmaiden contains explicit scenes that you should probably avoid looking at with parents around. It all starts with a con man wooing a Japanese heiress in order to commit to asylum when they are married. But his partner picks up a pocket picker and his girlfriend strays from the plan. If you are into South Korean movies thanks to Parasite, this is a must watch.
Documentary
Fox Rich’s mother, activist and entrepreneur is at the heart of this Oscar-nominated documentary that explores the impact of imprisonment on a family. Early in the film, we learn that Fox’s husband, Robert, has been jailed for 20 years for a robbery committed by him and Fox in 1997. Today’s home videos and footage are intertwined to form the offspring. time over two decades. It’s a great visual film with powerful messages about the American criminal justice system.
Do you love Lucy? What about insightful nostalgic documentaries? If so, you will have to tackle this Amy Poehler-led examination of the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The documentary captures the feel of home and sound films provided by Ball and Arnaz’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, and charts everything that came out of the duo’s iconic run in the I Love Lucy’s 50s sitting anniversary. Once wrapped up, Prime Video also has a fictional movie about the stars, “Being the Ricardos.”
My Name Is Pauli Murray (2021)
This 90-minute documentary provides a crucial context in the life of Pauli Murray, a non-conformist gender lawyer, poet and civil rights activist who was ahead of her time but overlooked by history. Murray advocated race and gender equality, and his ideas would later influence Supreme Court Judges Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall. Directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen (RGB, Julia), this thought – provoking film presents Murray ‘s many achievements and indelible influences.
In 2011, three years after retiring from the NFL, former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This emotional film depicts Gleason’s battle with ALS. Taken together by videos he recorded himself, Gleason’s story revolves around his loving wife, Michel, and his newborn son, Rivers. It’s an open look at how devastating ALS can be. If you have a Prime Video subscription, you must see Gleason.
Describing the brilliant career of rapper Kid Cudi, there are sit-down interviews with other heavyweight stocks in the music industry, including Cudi, Pharrell Williams, A $ AP Rocky and longtime Cudi collaborator Kanye West. It gives an honest insight into the path of the Cleveland – born rapper, from the huge success of his debut song Day ‘n’ Nite, which was originally posted on his MySpace page, to the rapper’s struggles with mental health issues. While there is no shortage of new music documentaries to stream these days, this one stands out from the crowd.
Comedy
A teenage horror comedy thriller with a social commentary piece. What a combo! Get Dukeed! It follows three slacker students, a nerd and their versatile teacher as they head to Galway, Scotland to try and win a prize for navigating the area using just a paper map. Everything becomes a little more thrilled as the four teenagers watch out for themselves against the Duke’s murderer, played by the brilliant Eddie Izzard. The whole young ensemble is amazing, playing a crackling tight script with treachery. Boy Scouts Meet Attack the Block, Get Duked! The chaos of walking, cussing and eating local flora is suspicious.
Written by Mindy Kaling and its lead roles, Late Night follows the host of a renowned news show whose ratings are declining. She hires a female Indian-American writer to compose the white male writer’s room. Never preach, arguing for the transformation of Emma Thompson into a true talk show host, Late Night is a lively comedy with tips from The Devil Wears Prada. That alone should be a compelling reason to look at it.
Set in New York in 1995, this comedy drama follows the sisters Ali and Dana, who are in various stages of life and often unsuccessful. When Ali (Abby Quinn) comes to the evidence that their father may be in a relationship, she bends Dana (Jenny Slate), who happens to be dealing with issues of her own that are related to inaction. Whether you’re interested in stories about complex families, interested in the idea of having a prepaid phone set or (reasonably) fans of anything Jenny Slate does, call to check out Landline.
Pleasant comedy, yes, but Brittany Runs also runs its Marathon close to home, focusing on the things we are all obsessed with: food, body image and fitness. Brittany, who is easily played by Jillian Bell, gets strong advice from her doctor to lose weight and reduce the hard-fought lifestyle. She starts running, making all the tough steps towards the life – changing finish. Watch it from your couch, then you are encouraged to go outside for a jog.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)
Nearly 15 years after Kazakh journalist and TV personality Borat fell in love with our big screens for the first time, he is back playing pranks on Americans no doubt while delivering extremely insightful cultural commentary. In Borat 2, or Borat Film Next: Proud Bribe Delivered to American Regime to Make Benefit Once of the Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Borat is on a trip to the US for his daughter Tutar (played by revelatory Maria Bakalova) to Vice President Mike Pence during the 2020 presidential election – and the COVID-19 pandemic. Be prepared to face the political wrong twice before you give in to the frightening laughs.
Do you need more Paul Bettany in your life? Of course you do, especially since WandaVision is done and dusted. Try Uncle Frank, a road flick set in the 70s about a gay man and his relationship with his family, including niece and college student Beth (Sophia Lillis from the films It and I Am Not Okay With This). The two drive across America to attend a funeral, Frank struggling to let his partner Wally (Peter Macdissi) come along. It’s funny with sharp edges, and Uncle Frank leaves you on a positive note.
Sci-fi
It’s hard to believe that there was a time when I only recognized Chris Pratt as the lovable goofball Andy in the Parks and Recreation show. Since then, he has established himself as a full-blown action star, appearing as the leading figure in flicks like Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World and this sci-fi thriller, The Tomorrow War. In the film, time travelers from the future visit Earth to share that humanity is losing war against aliens. Pratt interacts with others who are transported to the future to engage with them, which is an intense, action – packed feature that stretches for a long time but is likely to upset sci-fi fans.
The Vast of Night is a weird indie sci-fi flick from beginning director Andrew Patterson that plays with a story in clever ways. Long sweeping shots take us after two young radio workers who investigate the frequency of sound they think could be traced foreignly. The distinctive setting of 1950s New Mexico, with characters delivering monologues with a gentle tone of voice on the radio, fosters an eerie atmosphere with satisfying rewards.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
Continuing in the footsteps of Palm Springs, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a rom-com that explores the lives of its protagonists through a time loop. Margaret and Mark star in Katheryn Newton and Kyle Allen, two teenagers repeating the same day over and over again. They are meant to save someone from being hit by a pool at a beach ball. Charming and heartfelt, this is a solid view if not absolutely perfect.
Musical drama
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (2021)
This coming-of-age musical is based on the true story of Welsh schoolboy Jamie Campbell, who has a secret dream of becoming a drag queen. With songs from the stage opera’s original score, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will lift you up with hope, hitting the right beats.
This story comes from the spirit of a great team, including Donald Glover, his brother Stephen Glover and Atlanta collaborator Hiro Murai. The voice of Donald Glover the free-spirited Deni Maroon, a musician who lives with Kofi, who has no one other than Rihanna voices. Deni faces various obstacles in his mission to host a music festival for his island community, exploring major themes such as capitalism through the film’s short 56 minute run time. Note that Rihanna is not singing, but overall this opera is just catchy and sweet enough to watch.
Romance
While Sylvie’s Love is an old – fashioned love story, at its heart, it’s incredibly inspiring black romance: a period drama aimed at Blacks who are not dominated by issues of race and alms. Set in aesthetically enchanting New York City, he follows Sylvie and Robert, who have a chance to reconnect after a love affair five years earlier. Both work with music, and the soundtrack of the film, starring Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and many more, helps transport you to this wonderful place.
The Big Sick introduced the world to Kumail Nanjiani, who co-wrote the film based on his real-life romance with partner Emily V. Gordon. After the two go on a couple of engagement dates, Emily falls inexplicably sick and has to be put in an excited coma. While Kumail meets his worried parents in the hospital, his own Pakistani family is arranging dates for him with other women. Not only is it ripe for cultural comedy settings, The Big Sick is a down-to-earth and heartfelt story about an intracial couple.
Horror
Regina Hall stars in this thrilling horror thriller aimed at three women in an elite college in New England. The school has a cold ghost story, but the racism suffered by the main characters in the white university is largely as disturbing as any portrait of a figure or witch. You will want to get started with this exciting and effective directorial program from Mariama Diallo.
Luca Guadagnino’s horror painting will not be framed in a gloomy window, an art house for everyone, but for those who go down the rabbit hole of his prestigious dance school in Berlin, you will be able to acquire complex manners. The majestic head teacher is Tilda Swinton, who mentors the young ingenue Dakota Johnson. Be warned: The flexible dancers bring new contradictions to the physical horror. It’s a long movie, more than two and a half hours long, but if you have disturbing scenes and the magic of witchcraft, there are a few horrible scenes that you will want to watch.
This great directorial from Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. pushes the same emotional buttons. and Black Mirror episodes. It focuses on Nolan Wright (Mamoudou Athie), a man who survived a car accident, but is now suffering from amnesia. After failing his 10-year-old daughter from school, he undergoes an experimental treatment that yields cold fruits. As part of Blumhouse’s anthology, this sci-fi horror plays familiar cards, but will satisfy thanks to a focus on character and a twist to look forward to in the end.
Crime
It’s not your usual crime thriller, but I’m Your Woman follows the perspective of a mobster wife, played by Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Jean betrays fleeing with a newborn baby and bodyguard, a former associate of her husband Cal (Arinzé Kene). Neo-noir circles’ in the 70s around themes such as racial tension, privilege and survival. It moves forward at a remarkably steady pace, giving you time to absorb the powerful psychological impact of Jean ‘s new situation.
Adventure
Based on the life of British adventurer Percy Fawcett, The Lost City of Z plunges you into the Amazon rainforest in search of an ancient lost city. If that adventure setting is not enough, movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland … will have a mustache. A beautiful, great film that has been carefully crafted, The Lost City of Z may move slower than you might think, but that only adds to its fascinating psychological sequences.
